Music and Love

I have loved you with a love that lasts forever. And so with unfailing love, I have drawn you to myself. Again, I will build you up, and you will be rebuilt, virgin Israel.
Again, you will play your tambourines and dance with joy.

Jeremiah 31:2-4

This scripture from the prophet, Jeremiah, speaks to celebrating love with music and dance.  How wonderful that music holds this designation in the charter document of our faith (for those who partake of the Abrahamic traditions).

If you listen to the music on Common Good Radio, you will notice the absence of music that supports violence, sexual behavior, or gendered and stereotypical roles for girls and boys.  We aim to support music and story that speak to that which is good in some way – for the common good.  You will hear music that supports, home, family, love, kindness, joy, peace, hope – feelings, spiritual connections, play, problem solving – and other notions that support a faith centered, compassionate life-style.

As an example – I was just listening to Tom Chapin and some of his songs – I sang a concert in St. Paul, MN, with Tom in the Radio AAhs days – he is a nice fellow and talented musician.  He is a father, knows about family life and writes songs that speak to his experience. In his musical, gentle, folk and acoustic style songs, sing-able melodies tell stories.  I like the sounds of Vanessa Williams singing with Tom on Home is the Welcoming Sound, affirming that even if a parent travels for a living (like many a musician must do) coming home to family is the best there is for love lives there.  Family life full of love that renews us.

What about music and message in a song that greets a family with love is not what you want you kids to hear?  Doesn’t this sort of music help tell the story of your faith and family life?

That is our hope on Common Good Radio.  “Play your tambourines and dance with joy!”  Thanks for listening.
