Parenting With Confidence posted on October 30, 2009
You are the expert on your children - even though the world suggests that we need a barrel of experts in the back and foreground to tell us what to do. While it is important to have educators, medical professionals and spiritual guides to consult and help us with parenting, at the end of the day - you are the parent and that was God’s blessed choice for you and your child.
Listen to our Faith Parenting podcast this week to be reminded that you probably are making really good decisions for your kids - and that idea extends into their developing and present spirituality. Dr. Dawn Rundman has her PhD in child development and works in the field of religious and spiritual publishing. She is also a mother who offers helpful affirmation to us all for the parents we are. You will like what she has to say.
Music on Common Good Radio to support you: Bobby McFerrin’s, Don’t Worry Be Happy, Jaci Velasquez, We Will Overcome and Beth Nielsen Chapman, Shine All Your Light.

There has been national news and lots of energy around the refund of money spent on Baby Einstein videos as a result of the Disney claim these were educational for babies. Apparently, um, they are not. I hope all of your will go get back your dollars. Get the refund! This is a second blog entry to help you remember to support this effort.
Thanks to the folks at Campaign for Commercial Free Childhood who led this charge for clarity and integrity in media!

Babies and Videos: Big News From Disney - REFUNDS! posted on October 22, 2009
If you have purchased a Disney-owned, Baby Einstein video in the past five years you are in luck: you get your money back.

False and deceptive marketing that these baby videos are educational has led to this refund event. If you want a refund, act quickly, the window of time is not large.
Campaign For A Commercial Free Childhood has kept the pressure on Disney and friends regarding the claims of babies and educational videos.
What do you think about the premise that babies under age of two years old should not be watching TV/videos at all as the American Academy of Pediatrics claims?
For great media with your babies, sing to them with songs you hear on Common Good Radio, like Who’s My Pretty Baby by Elizabeth Mitchell, Make New Friends by Sweet Honey in the Rock or Over The Rainbow by Israel kamakawiwo’ole. Singing is good for the soul, babies and grown-ups.

Video Games Offer More Than Violence posted on October 12, 2009
Video games and kids are part of child and youth culture 2009. Parents know this, completely. Many (many) video games center on violence to succeed in the game.
Many studies will report that violent video games support violent behavior. There are also some interesting reports on video games and some not-so-violent behavior that children mimic - when the video games are not-so-violent.
Doug Gentile, PhD has some offerings in studies he has researched and organized to say, “games in which game characters help and support each other in nonviolent ways should increase both short-term and long-term prosocial behaviors.”
So if your child enjoys playing video games, take heart! There are some reasons to feel better.
Music: Listen for non-violent behavior in Joanie Bartels, Anything Is Possible, Sweet Honey in the Rock’s, So Glad I’m Here, and Allen Ruebens, All Is Well. There is good stuff all around - tell your friends about www.commongoodradio.org where hope shows up online 24/7.
